Session 5: Want More Opportunities for Students to Succeed? Implement the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework

  • Do you have only one style of teaching?
  • How flexible and responsive are your teaching approaches and assessment?
  • Are there opportunities for all students to be successful?

If we look back at our classes over the years, we know that our student population has become more diverse. This diversity can be both visible (race, ethnicity, age) and invisible (nationality, learning disability, educational background). It is apparent that a “one size fits all” instructional approach is no longer applicable or valid.

In this workshop, we will introduce a very powerful framework: the Universal Design for Learning (UDL).  UDL focuses on three principles: Engagement (the “why” of learning), Representation (the “what” of learning) and Action & Expression (the “how” of learning).  During this session, you will be able to design a course and assessments that can meet the needs of the widest range of students by reducing the number of barriers to learning.

*This workshop counts towards completion of any of CITL's Teaching Certificates. To learn more about our Teaching Certificate program please visit https://go.illinois.edu/teaching_certificates.
