Title: Forward and inverse problems for multiscale PDEs
Abstract: Owing to the co-existence of multiple scales, modelling the dynamics of many physical systems is inherently challenging. Mathematically, these are governed through (stochastic) PDEs, which look substantially different when expressing the same system at multiple scales. A classical example is the wave equation, its kinetic limit and the diffusion approximation. Although it might be tempting to use a fundamental model that works at all levels, such an approach is not practical owing to the difficulties in numerical simulations across multiple scales. This talk explores the role of multiscale analysis in describing the flow of information through such complex physical systems.
