Inspired by the development of the “spatial turn” within media studies, Helmke recognized another path for a “spatial turn” within the growing, related field of game studies: exploring the relationship between physical (usually urban) spaces and digital reproductions of such spaces within video games.
In this talk, he will discuss these reproductions, which he dubs “Interactive Metaspaces,” and the methods necessary to study them in relation to the spaces that they reproduce. Detailing methods that include historical research, media textual analysis (that includes the interactive element within video games), and what Helmke calls a “space-based autoethnography,” he will present his approach for studying this unique component of video game media.
