Graduate students and faculty are invited to join a reading group in preparation for Kenny Cupers' visit to UIUC, where he will deliver a lecture on his new book The Earth That Modernism Built: Empire and the Rise of Planetary Design on April 21 at 6:00 PM in Plym Auditorium, Temple Hoyne Buell Hall. Details for the lecture are available here

The reading group will meet on Tuesday, April 8, from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in the Unit office (100 English Building) to discuss selected chapters from the book: 

  • Introduction: The Earth as an Object of Design
  • Chapter 4: Infrastructure as Planetary Design
  • Epilogue: Spaceship Earth

Optional readings:

This reading group is organized jointly with Didem Ekici, the Architecture Lecture Series Committee, and the Unit for Criticism. Light snacks and drinks will be provided to the participants of the reading group. The participants are also invited to a lunch with Professor Cupers prior to the lecture for an informal discussion on his book and research.

About Kenny Cupers:

Kenny Cupers is Professor of Architectural History and Urban Studies at the University of Basel, where he co-founded and leads the Urban Studies division. Trained as an architect, urbanist, and historian, his research and teaching focus on the relationship between built environments and changing societies in African and European contexts.
