Praxis & the Promise of Public Learning – Spring 2020
“Praxis” comes from the Greek word, “prattein” which means “to do.” It is the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, embodied, or realized. Paulo Freire asserts that praxis is a cycle of learning, reflecting, and acting in order to protect ourselves and our communities from oppressive systems.
The Spring 2020 Friday Forum series will highlight the work of change-makers in our community. Hear from leaders who are putting their theories into practice – whether those theories are in science, technology, education or social justice.
Using praxis a guiding framework, speakers will center their presentations around these guiding questions:
- How do scholars, artists, and organizers engage with praxis?
- How does one participate in life-long learning with action?
- How do we stay open to changing our minds?
- How do they hope their work impacts, challenges or enhances public learning or understanding?
