Wireless transmissions take place in a broadcast fashion which makes them susceptible to eavesdropping by any radio in the transmitter’s vicinity. To provide security in addition to cryptography, my research tries to address this question: Is it possible to detect the presence of silent eavesdropper radios that just listen on the medium but do not transmit? The key idea is that a radio’s local oscillator leaks out a weak RF signal while it listens on the medium. My goal is to present some techniques that could be used to recover this weak signal to detect the eavesdropper’s presence.
