Empowering Continuous Monitoring and Self-Management of Chronic Diseases and Mental Health through Human-Centered AI

Abstract: Recent advances in AI and sensor technology have enabled major breakthroughs in non-intrusive and cost-effective psychophysiological assessment in complex sociotechnical systems such as aviation, ground transportation, process control and healthcare. This seminar covers a range of converging projects that showcase the efficacy of deploying AI-enabled mobile health tools, wearable sensors, and interactive systems for continuous monitoring of mental health, occupational stress and fatigue, driver and pilot drowsiness, and chronic diseases as well as application of human factors engineering to provide just-in-time intervention for self-management or recovery.

Biography: Dr. Farzan Sasangohar is an Associate Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Environmental and Occupational Health at Texas A&M University. He is the co-author of Design for Health: Applications of Human Factors in Healthcare and has published more than 80 peer-reviewed journal publications. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Human Factors in Healthcare and as the Chair of the Technical Program Committee of Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) Annual Meeting. He has received several international research, teaching, and service awards including the Technical Innovations in IE and Hamed K. Eldin Outstanding Early Career IE in Academia Award from the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE); Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award, William C. Howell Young Investigator Award, and Bentzi-Karsh Early-Career Service Award from HFES and Kinfar Young Researcher Award from the International Ergonomics Association (IEA). Dr. Sasangohar’s research interests include user-centered design and evaluation of remote and continuous monitoring tools for workers’ physical and mental health and performance in sociotechnical systems.
