Burning questions on wildfire
Wildfires influence nearly every component of the Earth system by altering land surfaces and emitting gases, heat, and fine particles. They modify atmospheric and soil properties and affect both the quality and quantity of water resources. Over the past decade, wildfire behavior has changed globally, with more extreme events occurring in many regions, including the western United States. Fire weather conditions, fuel availability, and ignition sources are major drivers of wildfire activity. In turn, wildfires influence weather and climate across multiple timescales. \
In this presentation, I will highlight several of our recent studies on wildfire–weather/climate interactions across different timescales, and share our work applying machine learning approaches to predict wildfires—particularly lightning-ignited wildfires—and to understand the associated land surface and meteorological dynamics. Finally, I will summarize key research gaps in understanding the drivers and impacts of wildfires and offer recommendations for future research.
Bio:
Yun Qian is an Earth Scientist at the DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). He received his Ph.D. from Nanjing University, China, and joined PNNL in 2000. He is currently a Laboratory Fellow and Leader of the Earth System Modeling Section (with >80 scientists and staff) in the Atmospheric, Climate, and Earth Sciences Division, PNNL.
Dr. Qian is an AMS Fellow, a member of the AMS Fellows Committee, and a former chair of the AMS Coastal Environment Committee. He also serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief for the JGR–Atmospheres and editor for Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. He has published more than 280 peer-reviewed articles and has received more than 26, 500 citations, with an h-index of 85. His research interests include regional and global climate modeling and uncertainty quantification, aerosol–climate interactions, snow and glacier impurities and their impacts, wildfires, urban and coastal environment modeling.
