Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a useful tool for examining relationships and interactions within social structures. Widely used in sociology, political science, and organizational studies, SNA allows researchers to uncover hidden patterns, identify influential actors, and understand the dynamics of information and resource flows. In recent years, its application has expanded to linguistics and applied linguistics fields, where it can be employed to analyze complex interaction and communication patterns among bi-/multilingual speakers. The insights from SNA can provide useful implications for language learning and assessment in both natural and instructional settings. This workshop will be divided into three parts. The first part introduces key concepts and analytical techniques in SNA, alongside real-world applications in social sciences. The second part presents a step-by-step demonstration of SNA in R, to analyze network data to visualize network structures and examine how network characteristics influence individual and group performance. Participants will gain hands-on experience with two R packages: igraph and sna. Finally, attendees will be invited to brainstorm possible applications of the technique in linguistics and applied linguistics research.
