Abstract

This talk will discuss opportunities for faculty within AFRL’s new Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Center. The Mutlidisciplinary Sciences and Technology Center (MSTC) within AFRL leads the integration of multiple disciplines to discover and exploit new phenomena for optimization and assessment of revolutionary aerospace vehicles from concept development through preliminary design. Our goal is to model systems—and systems of systems—to a level of fidelity necessary to capture the physics which drive system design and to perform design space exploration. MSTC is forming a new Collaborative Center, a strategic partnership to foster sustained research and professional relationships between universities, professors, and graduate students and government researchers. The new Collaborative Center will advance the research and development of novel design methods and tools for the optimization and assessment of revolutionary aerospace vehicles. It is expected to be mutually beneficial, increasing the agility and responsiveness of AFRL research efforts while providing experience and mentorship to students.

About the Speaker

Dr. Kevin McHugh studied nonlinear structural dynamics and aeroelasticity at Duke University, and joined AFRL in 2020. His work focuses on modeling multidisciplinary physics to integrate fluid-thermal-structure interactions into the design tools which will drive future air vehicle capabilities. He also leads MSTC’s collaborative center between academia, industry, and government partners.

Host: Professor Kathryn Matlack
