Abstract:

Adaptivity and resilience are becoming increasingly important for future communication networks, as the demands on those networks are increasing and frequently changing.
In our collaborative research center MAKI, we research adaptivity through the concept of transitions. See e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transition_(computer_science) to get a first impression. With a transition, a mechanism (like TCP) is replaced by a different but functionally similar mechanism (like UDP). The properties of these mechanisms regarding resilience and resource consumption may vary significantly. Thus, transitions can change the resilience of a communication network.
In this talk, we will describe our recent research beyond 5G and time-sensitive networks. The design of those networks is incredibly demanding, as dynamic up- and downscaling, latency and availability guarantees, and high bandwidths are common requirements. These requirements put an increasingly high burden on the available communication resources. To utilize these resources efficiently, we create a strong link between applications and the communication network to adapt to the demands of the applications dynamically. With that, we can provide resilient future communication networks with the available network resource.

In the collaborative research center MAKI https://www.maki.tu-darmstadt.de/sfb_maki/ueber_maki/index.en.jsp many research groups work jointly on new concepts and techniques for adaptive networks to cope with mission-critical constraints.

Bio:

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Steinmetz is a full professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology as well as at the Dept. of Computer Science at the Techn. Univ. Darmstadt, Germany, see www.kom.tu-darmstadt.de  Since 1996, there he is managing director of the “Multimedia Communications Lab”; until end of 2001, he directed a Fraunhofer Institute. He founded the Hessian Telemedia Technology Competence Center httc and he acted for approx. 20 years as the chair.

In 2013 together with leading scientists in the area of adaptive networking and distributed systems he established the DFG funded collaborative research center MAKI - “Multi-Mechanisms Adaptation for the Future Internet”. In the last period of funding together with more than 40 researchers, he works towards the vision of transitions enabling highly adaptive communications.

With his team, he has contributed to over 900 refereed publications. He has edited and co-authored a set of multimedia books which reflected the major issues; the initial version was the worldwide first in-depth technical book on multimedia technology. He has served as editor-in-chief, editor of various IEEE, ACM, and other journals.

For more than 10 years he has served as Hessian’s advisor for information and communications technology. He is a member of the Scientific Council and president of the Board of Trustees of the international research institute IMDEA Networks, Madrid, Spain. He was awarded with a Chair of Excellence at the Univ. Carlos III de Madrid. Since 2019 he is a member of the Academia Europaea. In 2017 he was among the first three scientists being awarded a fellowship of the VDE ITG and he is a fellow of the GI.  As first German scientist, he was awarded the honors of Fellow of both, the IEEE and the ACM.
