This Live Panel Discussion will assemble three industry leaders to answer questions about the use of geomembranes in exposed and unexposed applications and their longevity or durability. In particular, the longevity of different geomembranes in exposed and unexposed applications will be discussed and the testing that should be used to assess the remaining service life/longevity. How should the remaining service life be evaluated and what criterion or criteria should be used to assess whether it is still performing as designed, e.g., less than 50% loss of an index property, passing a electrical leak location survey, no discoloration, leakage below a predefined leakage rate, no cracking, or some other parameter. Given the importance of longevity to owners, should warranties be encouraged and if so what duration. Some of the applications that will be discussed are bottom liner systems for a range of applications, such as, waste, water, and chemical containment and cover systems including floating covers for water reservoirs. What is the expected longevity of current geomembranes in these applications? Should engineers require test coupons to be included to verify remaining service life and if so, where should they be placed because some anchor trench samples have recently shown accelerated aging?
