Title: Emerging Structure and Global Variation in Computational Construction Grammar
Abstract: This talk focuses on the emergence of grammatical structure in computational CxG given increasing amounts of exposure. I divide the process of emergence into three types of scaffolded structure which produce grammars of increasing complexity given exposure to more training data. At the same time, computational methods allow us to observe language use around the world in real-time, as with my project on computational language mapping at www.earthLings.io. I use this corpus data to show how computational syntax provides an important new tool for understanding variation within World Englishes.
