Opening for Illinois Archaeology: The Deep Roots of the Prairie State, A Traveling Exhibit

Join the Marion Carnegie Library for the opening ceremony for Illinois Archaeology: The Deep Roots of the Prairie State, a traveling exhibit. The exhibit will be on display on the Main Floor from August 18 through September 26.

History in Illinois didn’t begin when the first Europeans arrived 350 years ago. In fact, Euro-American communities have existed here for less than three percent of the time people have lived in Illinois. This exhibit examines the archaeological evidence people left behind to tell the story of Illinois’ deep past, offering a glimpse into the 12,500-year history of people living in Illinois and exploring how conflict, climate change, and new technologies shaped the ways people lived.
