Semiconductors are everywhere – from smartphones and computers to solar panels and energy converters. Over the past century, semiconductors have changed many facets of modern life, enabling both technological progress and new challenges. In this talk, I will explore the basic science behind modern semiconductor technology before reflecting on their broader societal impact. We will discuss how semiconductor devices have enabled the information age, transformed energy conversion, and opened pathways to climate solutions, while also confronting the environmental and ethical challenges posed by their manufacturing. I will finally touch on my own research on indium gallium nitride light-emitting diodes (LEDs), highlighting ongoing efforts to overcome efficiency challenges in green LEDs and their role in advancing sustainable lighting technologies.
