Abstract: The ETHZ-PSI Quantum Computing Hub is a research facility that is jointly operated by ETH Zürich and the Paul Scherrer Institut. It brings together leading technologies for quantum computing, such as superconducting qubits, trapped ions, and neutral atoms in optical tweezers, all under one roof at a large-scale national laboratory. In this presentation, I will discuss our efforts in the trapped ion lab towards realizing logical qubits in a monolithic trap and the insights we have gained along the way. Additionally, I will share my impressions on moving to and settling in Switzerland/the EU, as well as career prospects for a physics PhD graduate.
Bio: Jackson is a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zürich working with trapped calcium ions towards quantum simulation of many-body physics. He is also involved in developing compact cold-atom sources for trapped ion experiments. In 2021, he received his PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the guidance of Prof. Bryce Gadway. While at Illinois, he developed an apparatus for trapping individual potassium atoms in optical tweezers for quantum simulation of many-body physics.
