This talk is about instructor listening—a tool that individual instructors can hone to make and maintain spaces for students to voice their own disciplinary thinking. I will present an instance of instructor listening (and the co-occurring space for students’ disciplinary thinking) in a higher ed introductory STEM course. I will describe what I think is happening in this case and I will offer some ideas for what might be contributing to that happening.
