The Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center hosts a series of talks about topics related to Quantum Information Sciences in its various forms, including (but not limiting to): Quantum computers, Quantum simulation, Measuring the elusive Majorana fermion, and Photons. Talks will be given by senior researchers as well as students and postdocs.

"A unifying tool for stabilizer codes beyond the qubit model"

Abstract: The traditional model for quantum computing utilizes qubits and when factoring in noise uses qubit quantum error-correcting codes. In physics, however, there are very few true qubits. Qubits are typically a pair of states selected from a far richer physical system, which means we coarse-grain some of the error pathways and toss away a lot of possible computational space. I will discuss local-dimension-invariant (LDI) forms, an extension of the stabilizer framework, for translating already known stabilizer codes from qubit (or qudit) systems to systems with more degrees of freedom--including the infinite cases and where the locations don't all have the same degrees of freedom. This provides explicit constructions for codes with optimal parameter (n,k, and d) codes for CV registers, GKP-like registers, rotor registers, prime and composite valued registers, as well as mixed-register devices. 

Bio: Lane Gunderman is originally from Chicago, obtaining physics and math undergrad degrees from MIT before completing his master's and PhD degrees at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. He proceeded to work at Xanadu then HRL Laboratories for roughly 2 years. Since the fall of 2024 he has been an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois Chicago (visit us!).
