Join us for a nourishing conversation with award-winning author and UIUC professor David Wright
Faladé as we explore the tangled roots of Black identity, memory, and liberation across time and
continents. From the Civil War-era rebels of his novel "Black Cloud Rising" (NYT Critics’ Pick) to
the postwar Parisian love triangle in his work "The New Internationals", Faladé’s work excavates
hidden histories that challenge simple narratives of belonging.
This intimate Food for the Soul gathering will delve into his current project—a groundbreaking
family memoir tracing two contradictory American lineages: descendants of Dahomey royalty and
descendants of those they enslaved. Through storytelling and dialogue, we’ll confront questions
that resonate beyond any single family tree: How do we hold competing histories? What futures
become possible when we face the fullness of our past?
