TITLE: "Conceptual Assessment of Performance Characteristics of Electric Machines in Integrated Parallel-Hybrid Propulsion Systems"

ABSTRACT: Hybrid-electric propulsion (HEP) systems constitute a key element in the overall strategy to attain net-zero emissions by 2050 in the commercial aviation sector. HEP has the potential to provide significant reductions in fuel burns, without any compromise of the mission scope of the aircraft. Designers of integrated hybrid-electric aircraft engines can provide propulsion efficiency improvements without the need to significantly re-engineer the entire aircraft, without major delays of entry-into-service of these higher efficiency systems. The assessment of the performance potential of selected electric machine designs is required to determine the economic viability and benefits of the hybrid-electric approach. Integration of electric machinery inside the engine compartment of an aircraft poses challenging constraints in the electric machine design that must be explicitly considered in the design process to correctly assess the power density and efficiency characteristics. In this presentation, we discuss this conceptual assessment process using the Multiphysics-based electric machine design exploration toolbox and demonstrate their power density and efficiency tradeoff curves.

TITLE: "Cryogen-free Superconducting Machine for Aerospace Applications"

ABSTRACT: Superconducting (SC) electric machines can reach extremely high specific power and are good candidates in aircraft electric propulsion applications. But the thermal management of the cryogenic environment has posed challenges to build SC machines for practical aerospace applications. Recently, a cryogen-free rotor system, which employs an on-rotor Stirling-cycle cryocooler for refrigeration and a unique spoke suspension for thermal isolation, was proposed. We present a literature review of the current status of SC machine design and a recap of the progress to date. The review’s focus is on different types of thermal isolated torque couplers and the tests on thermal, electrical, and mechanical components.
