Faculty Seminar Series on Teaching & Learning
Theme: Improving and Assessing Teaching Excellence
Teaching is an important goal and responsibility on our campus. Most recently, we have been actively identifying ways to more effectively assess and improve teaching. Think/reflect upon your teaching practice. What are some things you can implement in your teaching that will immediate impact student learning?
You are invited to join a dynamic learning community by participating in this specially designed workshop series for all faculty (across all disciplines and rank). We’ll share strategies and best practices from research-based pedagogy. Come and meet new colleagues. Great conversations and handouts guaranteed.
Session 4: Develop Effective Assessments of Student Learning: Tests, Exams, & Rubrics
Have you heard your students say this?
- “We weren’t taught that”
- “This test is too hard and too long”
- “This quiz was useless”
The task of assessing and grading student learning is one of the most complex and stressful responsibilities of the faculty member and, at the same time, one of the most important. It is critical that the assessment of our students is fair, reliable, valid, and relevant. Different test items serve different purposes and we will learn how to write the most effective items using the key principles of test construction. This is an opportunity to “test” your own test items! We'll address the above questions and more in this highly interactive workshop. Handouts with sample assessment forms will be provided.
*This workshop counts towards completion of any of CITL's Teaching Certificates. To learn more about our Teaching Certificate program please visit https://go.illinois.edu/teaching_certificates.
