African studies - Outreach Calendar

Unlike traditional donors, who have been engaged in African continent for decades, Turkey’s relations with the continent had been weak. Since 2003, Turkey’s relations with countries sub-Saharan African countries have considerably improved. Republic of Turkey opened new embassies, the government has signed a number of cooperation agreements with African governments and humanitarian aid organizations from Turkey paid more attention to sub-Saharan Africa and poured more resources to the region. One cannot help wondering, if all these efforts are part of a grand political strategy. Or do Turkish government and NGOs move purely on humanitarian grounds? The talk will focus on the history of Turkey’s involvement in Africa, stages of relations and finally examine the motives behind Turkey’s growing interest in the continent.
