Successful adaptation to changing environmental conditions depends on the ability of one's memory to flexibly guide decision processes. Possible roles for the hippocampus and lateral habenula in this critical function will be discussed, as well as their implications for our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying disorders of behavioral flexibility (e.g. depression).
