Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning (CITL)
The Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning is dedicated to promoting, enhancing, and assessing teaching effectiveness and student learning. We assist faculty, academic units, and teaching assistants in improving instruction. In addition to the events listed below, we are always available for individual consultations or special activities within a department or college. Most of the workshops count toward CITL certificate program continuing education credit. Please check back often to see what events have been added. The traditional lecture mode is the oldest and most widely used teaching method. However, when compared to other teaching methods, it is often not as effective in areas such as student retention of information and problem-solving. Join us as we will explore ways this enhanced lecture method can be more effective; e.g., in organization, delivery, and student engagement.

Join us online on the first Thursdays of the month from 12pm - 1pm as we welcome new faculty, new stories, and new ways of thinking about the art of teaching.

In this workshop, we’ll use group discussion and some short journaling exercises to start generating material that you might use as you craft your different teaching statements. The idea is to explore both your philosophical identity as a teacher and to connect facets of that identity to concrete examples that will be useful to your statements.

Barbara Oakley says that “students fool themselves into thinking they’re learning.” Students may believe that they “know” the content and that they can easily retrieve what they learned; however when it comes down to doing assignments or exams, they are often unsuccessful. Come and learn how to teach our students how to be more efficient and effective learners.

Being fully engaged 100% of the time is not a realistic expectation, but there are a variety of ways to promote student engagement so they can get the most out of their learning. This workshop will focus on concepts underlying student engagement and practical strategies to engage our students across diverse formats.
