Beckman and Campus Calendars

Two graduate students will present their research at the third Beckman Graduate Student Seminar of the spring 2023 semester: Jilai Cui, neuroscience program; and Zhengchang Kou, electrical and computer engineering. The event takes place Wednesday, Mar. 1 at noon in 1005 Beckman Institute and on Zoom. Register in advance to attend in person or on Zoom.

Dr. Backlund will present his lab's work establishing the quantum information theoretical limits to several tasks related to lifetime estimation and discrimination of a two-level spontaneous optical emitter. Focusing in particular, on the model problem of resolving two mutually incoherent exponential decays with highly overlapping temporal probability profiles.

With intensive mentoring and systematic activities focused on professional development, trainees will become the next generation of interdisciplinary leaders capable of undertaking fundamental research and enabling translational advances.

Mark Hasegawa-Johnson will speak at the Beckman Institute's hybrid Director's Seminar at noon Thursday, Mar. 23. Hasegawa-Johnson, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will discuss the Speech Accessibility Project, a Beckman collaboration funded by Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, and Microsoft. Dr. Costantini will demonstrate that high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is capable of delivering crucial information that cannot be achieved by other current analytical methods about “real world” electronic and energy materials. The Beckman Institute Open House will be held in person on Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1. Visitors of all ages can do hands-on demos and activities, solve a science scavenger hunt, and meet the people behind world-changing scientific discoveries.
