As part of the Food for Thought lecture series sponsored by the Asian American Cultural Center, Doo Jae Park, the recipient of the 2018 Jeffrey S. Tanaka Grant for research in Asian American studies, will give a talk on Korean American participation in American sports. A complimentary lunch will be served.
Mattias Frihammar, Lars Kaijser and Maja Lagerqvist, all from Stockholm University, are currently developing a research project on so-called “invasive species.” When there are no so-called natural enemies in the new environment, invasive species can massively expand. For their example they are working on the flower, lupine, which is regarded as invasive.
This presentation will discuss the different ways that the public aquariums engage the visitors in this effort. Dr. Lars Kaijser of Stockholm University will argue for an understanding of their engagement through the concepts of banal sustainability and domestication. He will also discuss how this encompasses an aesthetization of the problems of plastic waste.
Avital Livny is an Assistant Professor in Political Science at Illinois and her talk is entitled Historical Diversity Predicts Contemporary Tolerance: The Cultural Legacy of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey.
