Joe Morris is widely recognized as one of the most original and important improvising artists of our time. Morris will offer a lecture and performance on Wed, Oct. 6, and a workshop on Fri Oct. 8 at the Spurlock Museum. His lecture will draw from his book, 'Perpetual Frontier: The Properties of Free Music' (2012). A performance follows.

The Navratri commences on the first day (pratipada) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashwin. The festival is celebrated for nine nights once every year during the beginning of October, although as the dates of the festival are determined according to the lunar calendar, the festival may be held for a day more or a day less.

On Oct. 7 at 7pm, join a virtual screening of and discussion about thte Egyptian Film, Umm Kulthum, A Voice Like Egypt, the first documentary to bring the musician Umm Kulthum to an American audience. The film puts her life in the context of the epic story of 20th century Egypt, as it shook off Colonialism and confronted Modernity.

Join Peach of the Midwest for a free, family-friendly program on Sunday Oct. 10 from 1 to 3 pm. This program will include 2 activities. In the Knight Auditorium, Peach will give tips on karaoke performances and offer competitions among participants. In our upstairs Collaboration and Community Gallery, participants will make a glitzy microphone.

In this seminar we will speak with girls from rural India and their teachers to understand how COVID-19 affected India, and in particular, girls' education which has been at the forefront in the Global South. We will also speak with grassroots team members and co-founder of the non-profit SwaTaleem to understand how girls and other stakeholders responded at this time.
