    Beltane is the time of the marriage and union of the Goddess as Mother Earth and the God of the Greenwood. It is an ancient fertility festival marking the beginning of the planting cycle. The festival was to ensure a good growing season and a bountiful harvest. Beltane is light-hearted, joyful, and full of passion that fuels life, joy, and fertility.

    Pronounced "Rezván," this annual Baha’i festival commemorates the 12 days when Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Baha’i Faith, publicly proclaimed His mission as God’s messenger for this age. Elections for Baha’i institutions often occur during this period. Bahá'í students or employees observing the Twelfth Day of Ridván may request schedule adjustments in order to observe.

Host: Department of Spanish and Portuguese and The Program in Jewish Culture and Society Sponsors: Center for Advanced Study, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Department of Comparative and World Literature, Humanities Research Institute, LAS Global Studies, School of Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics, Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, and Women and Gender in Global Perspectives Program SPEAKER: ACHY OBEJAS Achy Obejas is the author of Boomerang/Bumerán, an unique and inspiring bilingual collection of poetry written in a bold, mostly gender-free English and Spanish that addresses immigration, displacement, love and activism. She also authored The Tower of the Antilles, which was a PEN/Faulkner finalist, among other honors. Her novels include Ruins and Days of Awe, which was a Los Angeles Times Best Books of the Year. Her poetry chapbook, This is What Happened in Our Other Life, was both a critical hit and a national best-seller. A recipient of a USA Artists fellowship, an NEA and a Cintas fellowship, among other awards.
