Welcome to the Beckman Institute! In this onboarding session, new Beckman faculty and affiliates will learn from Associate Director for Research Cristina Álvarez-Mingote what Beckman Institute services are available, who to contact with questions, and how to be a collaborative and fully engaged member of the Beckman community.

Stop by to have a free professional portrait taken any time between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, in Beckman’s third floor tower room (3269). Photos will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis, so no need to make an appointment. Short lines are possible, but our photographer works quite efficiently.

The Beckman Institute will celebrate Beckman Founding Director Ted Brown the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 10. Ted has generously named Ted's Café, the completely remodeled gathering space within the Beckman Atrium.

Catherine Dulac of Harvard University, will give the annual Beckman-Brown Lecture at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, in the Beckman Auditorium. Her talk is titled, "Neurobiology of Sickness and Social Behavior." A ribbon cutting for Ted's Café, named for Beckman Founding Director Ted Brown, is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. that day. A reception will follow at 3 p.m.

A workshop for researchers interested in electron microscopy. It's scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16 and Wednesday, Sept. 17 at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, 405 N. Mathews Ave., Urbana. This workshop will feature Leica Advanced Workflow Specialist Seth Villarreal.
