The talk will focus on Hélène Cixous's recourse to the figure of Jonah in her short story "Jonah's Whale," which rewrites the Biblical Book of Jonah, concentrating on Jonah's response to the calling of his name, the significance of mastery when it aims to obliterate others, and the notion of responsibility to others.

Dr. Nafissa Thompson-Spires will be speaking at the Illini Union on December 10 at 7pm. Dr. Thompson-Spires will be discussing her recently released book "Heads of the Colored People", a compilation of short stories that discuss such as race, gender, and class. This event is a One Book One Campus event, part of an annual series of book presentations on campus.
