In the adult mammalian CNS, injured axons cannot regenerate, contributing to unrecoverable functional deficits. This lecture will present recently uncovered cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating the processes of neuronal injury responses and axon regeneration. Further discussion will focus on the progress in developing effective strategies to promote axon regeneration and functional recovery in experimental injury models in vivo, such as spinal cord injuries and optic nerve crush.
