Many species of primate have been produced in relatively short periods of evolutionary time, and their faces all look extremely different, even when they’re closely related. Here, I explore the mechanisms maintaining and producing variation in facial coloration and patterning, both within and between species. To do so, I combine approaches from behavioral ecology, computer vision, machine learning, endocrinology, functional and quantitative genetics, and comparative and experimental psychology.
