The ISE offers an immersive experience with community vendors representing service agencies and student participants organized into diverse "families." Each family faces unique challenges like housing insecurity, unemployment, disability, or single parenthood. Over four fast-paced 15-minute "weeks," participants engage in daily tasks to meet necessities and secure shelter. The simulation, lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, includes an introduction, the exercise, and a debriefing where insights are shared. Recognized for its impact, the simulation addresses social and racial perspectives.
