In the era of a rise in natural disasters, school shootings and conflict it is critical to inquire–how do we support our children and buffer the negative impacts of exposure to these events? This CEU event will provide insight on children’s reactions to trauma, best practices in trauma informed care, basic strategies to help a child feel safe, and how to mitigate the short and long term effects of trauma exposure.
Speaker: Dr. Tara Powell, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work
Training to respond or prevent an active shooter situation
Since the first shots fired at Columbine High School, we as first responders worldwide have been dealing with active shooters in our workplaces, our schools and our public meeting spaces. One question continues to plague us, “what can we do”? For the last 10 years, we at the University of Illinois Police department have been training our community on ways to not only protect themselves, but also ways to help prevent them. This CEU will provide an overview of the 3 Minutes to Live class and what we have learned after presenting it for more than a decade.
Speaker: Sgt. Aaron Landers, University of Illinois Police Department
