11:00am, David Wilson, Chicago's Gentrifying South Side: Blues Clubs and Political Resistance

Advancing our understanding of current kinds of urban politics, this study examines how a deft, subterranean politics has formed around the rapid gentrifying of blues clubs on Chicago’s South Side. As long-term clubbers look to preserve this precious resource from the conversion to more commercialized clubs, their actions to blunt this have been remarkably creative and nuanced. Professor Wilson will conclude with ruminations about the future of these clubs and the distinctive nature of this politics.
