How did we get here?  Where did we come from?  Where are we going?  These are some of the most basic and fundamental questions we ask.  Yet, are we any closer to start answering them?  Investigating our origins in the Universe starts with understanding the chemistry needed to build up this molecular complexity in astronomical environments and to then transport this chemistry to early planetary systems.  For over 50 years, the molecular complexity in astronomical environments has grown to more than 200+ individual molecular species detected in various astronomical environments.  And the environments where these species are found are extreme - molecular material is now found in a host of Galactic and extragalactic environments and has been used as a tracer of a variety of conditions including, but certainly not limited to, PDRs, XDRs, shocks, diffuse gas, dense gas, HMCs and UC HII regions as well as the possible carriers of this chemistry to planetary systems – comets and meteorites.  The Department of Astronomy at the University of Illinois laid the foundation to try and determine a true chemical picture of the universe with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) Array.  From the foundation of the BIMA array came the transformational science realized by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).  With ALMA we are now moving beyond simple detections and towards characterizing the distributions and morphology of molecular material towards these environments. In addition, a drastic change may be needed to the existing chemical networks to move beyond the "epicycle solutions" when new molecules are found in order to make the models truly predictive.
