Technology is rapidly transforming our ability to gather massive quantities of high-resolution ecological data at unprecedented spatial and temporal scales. Camera traps have become a ubiquitous tool that can generate invaluable information on environmental and anthropogenic factors affecting vulnerable wildlife populations. Here, I will discuss my work with “Snapshot Safari” (www.snapshotsafari.org), a collaborative research and conservation camera trap program deployed across eastern and southern African. As one of the first large-scale camera trap initiatives, Snapshot Safari has spearheaded innovative developments in citizen science, machine learning, and conservation technology as well as providing critical data to support predator reintroduction efforts and other on-going conservation endeavors.
