K-14 PDH Educators Workshop: "A Short Introduction to Caribbean Studies"

This short introduction surveys the contemporary issues in the Caribbean region and its current legal, economic and sociopolitical challenges. Taking global and transnational perspectives, we will be discussing the multiple processes that led the Caribbean region to its current situation of economic, political and social vulnerability. To do so, the course looks at: the legal, political and economic history of the Caribbean region; its experiences with colonialism, economic (under)development, tourism and debt; and the effects of climate change in the region (including hurricanes, earthquakes and other disasters). All of this will allow us to have a better understanding of the Caribbean, its relations with the US and the challenges faced by the region.

Hybrid event, presented in person and via Zoom.

A professional development workshop for K-12 and community college educators, and librarians. Illinois K-12 educators are eligible to receive ISBE Professional Development Hours (PDH).
