Academic Leadership and Civil Rights: Practical Guidance for Department Leaders
Academic leaders are often the first to receive concerns or questions about classroom discussions, conduct in laboratories, faculty conduct, academic freedom, and free expression. This session largely focused on answering your questions will provide department heads and academic leaders with practical guidance on responding to these situations, supporting students and faculty, and understanding the University’s responsibilities under Title VI, VII, and IX. We’ll discuss the role of campus civil rights offices, common misconceptions about the complaint process, and how as a public university we can meet our civil rights obligations while simultaneously protecting academic freedom and free expression that are central to our educational mission of exploration and inquiry.
