The Rare Book & Manuscript Library recently acquired an extremely rare first edition of this epic poem, of which only two other copies have been identified worldwide. The poem is a sequel of the great epic chivalric texts that swept away European audiences in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The warrior woman Bradamante, in love with the pagan Ruggiero, is overcome by jealousy and the fury that had already affected her cousin Orlando in the 1516 classic, Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto. The talk will introduce the chivalric tradition and its contexts as well as this extravagant little poem, printed in Venice in 1552. The book, featuring five half-page woodcut illustrations, will be on display.

Eleonora Stoppino is Associate Professor of Italian, Medieval Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Illinois, where she directs the Program in Medieval Studies. She has published on Dante, Boccaccio, Ariosto, Tasso, the Italian epic tradition, and medieval conduct literature. Her current projects include LICA, the complete catalogue of chivalric incunabula, an edited volume on Ulysses between epic and opera, and a book on animals and contagion in Medieval Italian literature.
