Work-family conflict is considered an important determinant of fertility. The theory of planned behavior provides an analytical framework for the micro-study of fertility intention. Based on 633 field survey data in Hubei Province of China in 2016, the present paper explores the mechanism of the impact of work-family conflict on the second fertility intention. The results indicate that fertility attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavior control have significant effect on the second birth intention, subjective norm rather than fertility attitude is the strongest influencing factor. Work-family conflict has no significant effect on the second fertility intention, it is fully mediated by the two paths of fertility attitude and perceived behavior control.

Anrong Hu is Associate Professor at the College of Economics and Management, Huazhong Agricultural University, China. Her research focuses on labor relations, population policy and female employment, and work-family conflict and enrichment issues. She received her PhD degree from Wuhan University and is currently a member of the International Association for Chinese Management Research.
