Art @ the Y, a public arts initiative of the University YMCA, is pleased to present BESA: A Code of Honor -- Muslim Albanians who Rescued Jews During the Holocaust.

BESA: A Code of Honor is a traveling exhibit from Yad Vashem: The World Holocaust Remembrance Center. Besa means “to keep the promise.”  It still serves as the highest ethical code in the country of Albania today. Following the German occupation in Albania in 1943, the Muslim-majority country of Albania protected their Jewish citizens and provided refuge to Jewish people from other parts of Europe. Almost all of the Jewish people living within Albanian borders during the war survived. Learn about the Albanians that went out of their way to save their Jewish community.

BESA is curated by Yad Vashem, World Holocaust Remembrance Center and produced by the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center.  Shown at the University YMCA in partnership with the Central Illinois Mosque and Islamic Center, CU Jewish Federation, Illini Hillel, the Interfaith Alliance of Champaign County, Interfaith in Action, and Sinai Temple.
