Plot Twist: Independent Living Skills ARE Employment Skills

Presenters:
Jessica Sipovic and Paula Mueller

"Independent living skills are often viewed as a separate component of transition planning, yet research shows they play a critical role in employment and postsecondary success. Also referred to as adaptive or life skills, they encompass the knowledge and behaviors needed to navigate home, work, and community life. Skills such as community participation, executive functioning, self-advocacy, transportation, financial literacy, and personal care are essential for obtaining, maintaining, and advancing in employment. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn about the connection between independent living skills and career readiness, examine how these skills impact employment outcomes, and learn practical strategies for embedding them into transition programming. Participants will leave with evidence-based instructional practices, implementation tools, and actionable strategies for teaching essential independent living skills that better prepare students with disabilities for success in work, education, and adult life."
