Immunization programs throughout the world work to prevent suffering and death from vaccine preventable diseases. They do so by using available vaccines to achieve the greatest impact and benefit at population and individual levels. In this talk, I’ll describe accomplishments and challenges of China’s National Immunization Program and explore the process and challenges of building population immunity against SARS-CoV-2 in the context of the overall response to COVID-19 in China.

Dr. Rodewald is a pediatrician and is senior advisor to the National Immunization Program of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) since 2018.  From 2012 through 2017 he was team lead for the Expanded Program on Immunization in the World Health Organization China Office. Prior to working in WHO China, Dr. Rodewald served with U.S. CDC’s Immunization Services Division - initially as associate director for science, and from 2000 to 2012 as director. His long-time research interest has been on improving children’s access to vaccines. He met his wife, Patricia, in graduate school at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana campus while she was in the Art History Department and he was in the Physician Computer Science Training Program. They have two grown children, a mathematician and an art historian.

2023 LAS Alumni Humanitarian Award Recipient
Dr. Rodewald will receive the 2023 Alumni Humanitarian Award from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences for his dedication to improving children’s access to life-saving vaccines. He will be recognized, along with eight other alumni award recipients, at a celebration in April.

The event will be recorded and made available for those who cannot attend.
