Abstract:

The sensing and transduction of force, mechanosensation, occurs in every living cell. Local and general anesthetics pharmacologically block the effects of mechanical force. I will discuss a unifying mechanism for the regulation of ion channels by mechanical force and anesthesia. The molecular mechanism is based on the disruption of ordered lipid/protein clustering and the subsequent generation of potent lipid metabolites acting on ion channels.
