As the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Graduates from Construction to Discoveries

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on August 30, 2026. This flagship mission’s vast, deep surveys will help astronomers explore dark matter, dark energy, exoplanets, and almost anything from our own solar system to galaxies at the edge of the observable universe. The telescope provides the sharpness and sensitivity of Hubble, but with its 300-megapixel camera it can map the cosmos a thousand times faster. Commissioning is now underway, and beginning in early 2027 Roman will begin producing a wealth of survey observations. The data – almost 1.5TB of images per day – will be released in near-real-time to accelerate the rate of astronomical discoveries.
