6PPD-quinone (6PPD-q) is a contaminant of emerging concern and is a transformation product of the tire anti-degradant, 6PPD. 6PPD-q was identified as fatal to coho salmon in 2020. Since that time, it has been documented as acutely toxic to multiple trout species found throughout the United States. 6PPD and 6PPD-q are carried by tire wear particles through the environment, and the chemicals have been found in stormwater, waterways, aquatic organisms, soils, air, and humans. This webinar, featuring presenters from the Interstate Technology & Regulatory Council (ITRC) 6PPD Team, will provide an overview of the science surrounding 6PPD and 6PPD-q. Attendees will gain insight into the current state of knowledge on topics such as the use of 6PPD in tires; toxicity in aquatic species; occurrence, fate, and transport; measuring and sampling; and mitigation measures. The webinar will cover the ITRC 6PPD and 6PPD-q resources, including their 2024 Guidance Document. EPA will also provide a brief overview of recent 6PPD research at the Agency.
