The Living Earth: Indigenous Science and Reciprocal Relationships with Non-Human Beings

Natasha Myhal
Provost’s Fellow - Assistant Professor. Indigenous Environmental Studies, Ohio State University

In this talk, I introduce a novel approach to Indigenous Science and storytelling through maamawijiwan (watershed) thinking. This approach emphasizes our deep connection to the places we inhabit and the non-human beings with whom we share them. It highlights the intricate relationships within ecosystems, such as watersheds, and advocates for Indigenous worldviews to lead and shape conservation practices. I will discuss my ongoing collaborative research with the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Tribal Natural Resource Department, showcasing how Indigenous oral traditions are grounded in Indigenous Science. These insights not only enhance our understanding of environmental issues but also address broader social and cultural factors, making them essential for effective and respectful research and collaboration.
