In the management of glaucoma, measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) is crucial, and the Goldmann Applanation Tonometer (GAT) remains the gold standard tool in ophthalmology practice. This apparatus utilizes the Imbert-Fick Principle to calculate intraocular pressure at a greater level of reliability compared to other methods. But GAT requires a high degree of operator skill. In fact, when performed by an unskilled practitioner, GAT can result in damage to the patient’s eye in the form of corneal abrasion. In this talk, Ashkhan Hojati describes development of a first-of-its-kind online simulation which mimics the steps of GAT in a virtual format. The new free tool called GatSim allows trainees to practice the skill before performing it on real patients. The application is poised to improve trainees’ skills, hasten the time to reach expertise, and minimize potential patient complications.

Ashkhan Hojati is a fourth-year medical student at Carle Illinois College of Medicine. He graduated in 2016 with bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University and received his master’s degree in Physiology & Biophysics at VCU Medical Center in 2019. He has held multiple research positions at VCU Medical Center and has published and presented on a variety of topics including molecular psychiatry, medical device design, and pharmaceuticals.
