Title: "Multimodality Imaging with light and sound"

Speaker: Yun-Sheng Chen, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.

The advancement of molecular biology has opened up a new route toward personalized medicine from diagnosis to treatment. Photoacoustic imaging, using short laser pulses to induce ultrasound signals to form images, reveal physiological information or cell biology in human. Critical features of photoacoustic imaging include high-contrast blood vessel images, blood oxygen levels, and essential components of tissue such as lipids and collagen without the need for imaging agents, as well as the distribution of disease-associated biomarkers with imaging agents. Ultrasound imaging, on the other hand, provides vascular imaging, tissue morphology, and elasticity. Photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging are complementary; they provide structural, physiological, functional, and molecular information in one imaging system. Multimodal imaging offers a safe and low-cost choice for fulfilling the need for future imaging diagnostics. In this seminar, Dr. Chen will review recent progress and challenges in the field. He will present their recent innovation in developing multimodal photoacoustic/ultrasound imaging techniques to image across various scales from the molecular level to animals.
